Seabiscuit with owner Charles Howard

Charles Howard was an American businessman who made his fortune as a car dealership, he became a prominent thoroughbred racehorse and owner of the legendary Seabiscuit. Charles owned a ranch in Mendocino County, California.

In August 1936, while at Saratoga Race Course Charles Howard asked his wife what she thought of a rather small, mud-coloured horse. She said he would lose, and bet him a cool drink that she was right. The horse in question was the legendary Seabiscuit, and in an out-of-character performance, led from wire to wire, and Howard, acting on a feeling in his gut and the approval of his trainer, bought the horse for $8,000.
